Hand
Animation 2005 Stop-motion
drawing animation and video 1:40 min. Drawing
inspiration from the South African artist William Kentridge, I made
a stop motion animation using a very similar process. Kentridge is known
for his drawing animations in which he draws one frame after another
on top of each other. Before drawing a new frame he will rub out the
old one so that only the trace of the previous drawing is visible. My
piece differs slightly as I have combined the animation with video footage.
Hand Animation is thus a piece where I have filmed myself drawing a
hand which then becomes animated, giving the impression of coming to
life and grasping into emptiness. My initial goal was to express insecurity through the making of Hand Animation. This goal was, however, defeated by the fact that I was redrawing every frame and consequently gaining greater confidence in my drawing abilities. In order to break this confidence I blindfolded myself and tried drawing straight lines with the charcoal attached to a tall stick. I chose to include this process into the animation as an experiment.
