Loop 2009

Stop-motion drawing animation 5:21 min.

The technique used in my stop motion animations is very similar to that of the South African artist William Kentridge. Kentridge is known for his drawing animations in which he draws one frame after another with charcoal. Before drawing a new frame he will rub out the previous one so that only the trace of the drawing is visible. He then draws on top of the previous drawing.

My animations reveal the whole process of the drawing from the very beginning. Marks appear gradually on the white sheet of paper forming lines that eventually reveal an object. These objects are drawn by examining found imagery resembling scientific diagrams. I am interested in how these objects are perceived once taken out of their context. While drawing a diagram gradually I begin to associate them with other objects visually. The process is similar to that of cloud spotting and ‘projective tests’ such as the Rorschach inkblot test within psycho analysis.
